Sun, Apr 3: Joshua Tree National Monument

On our way to Arizona, we drove through Joshua Tree National Monument, spending most of day there. Very pretty Yucca plants, lots of rock formations,.  We took a couple of short hikes.

Petroglyphs.

We stopped at an overlook over Coachella Valley.  You can see the San Andreas fault (the ridge running down the valley).

Mon, Apr 4: Imperial Sand Dunes and Organ Pipe National Monument

Drove past the Salton Sea, and took a quick stop at the Imperial Sand Dunes.

And then stopped in Yuma for lunch.  We were disappointed in their historical section, as it was in the 1950’s and not historical to us :-), instead of the old west that we had expected.

We then drove to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument.  They also had lots of Saguaro cactus (more than in the Saguaro monument according to some).

As well as the namesake organ Pipe cactus.  Organ Pipe Cactus has lots of trunks coming up from the bottom.

We stayed the night in Ajo, a quaint little town.

Tue, Apr 5: Ajo and Tucson

In Ajo,

Then drove to Tucson.  On the way to the Desert Museum …

At the Desert Museum …

Lots of hummingbirds in the sanctuary, including a mother feeding her babies…
The restaurant at the museum had very good food, and is apparently well known for its good food.

We spent the night in Tucson.
